So, you’ve found a Reiki practitioner who you feel comfortable and called to work with after your online search. They appear empathic, knowledgeable and easy to do business with, but there is a problem. You live a good few hours away from their practice, and it doesn’t feel convenient for you to travel there for an hour-long appointment. Fortunately, this problem is not a problem because you can receive your Reiki treatment without even being in the same room as the Reiki practitioner! This is known as distance or remote Reiki.
Reiki means spiritually guided life force energy. Rei from the Japanese referring to spirit, source and divine. Ki is Japanese referring to life force energy. This is the unseen, intelligent, benevolent energy that exists within us and all around us. In other Eastern spiritual practices this energy is known as qi within the Chinese energy cultivation practice of Qigong and is known as Prana within the ancient practice of Yoga. Humans have been working with energy healing for thousands of years. As part of the spiritual path of Reiki, practitioners harness this energy through working with breath, symbols, mantras and meditation to promote healing for themselves and others.
Unseen Energy Everywhere!
Energy is everything and everywhere. It is mostly unseen, working in the forms of sound, heat, radio waves, phone calls, texting, microwave, tidal and light. Although, generally we cannot see the sound when a song is playing, we know that music is happening as we hear it through our ears and feel the vibration through our whole bodies. We also know that energy is at work when our food cooks in the oven or microwave. These forms of waves or energy pass through seemingly empty space to do their jobs. Looks can be deceiving though because that space is not empty but full of unseen energy doing its thing. The human energy field (or aura) also exists within this much larger energy field.
Sometimes known as the Quantum Field, this topic has been the fascination of quantum physicists for decades, and arguably was studied for millennia by ancient cultures. I’m sure you have walked into a room and could feel the emotion of the person or group in that room. This is your energy field and limbic part of your brain being affected and reading what type of energy you are walking into. Bodies are so clever to have evolved to be able to feel another person’s energy.
Reiki passes through the same huge energy field to enable distance Reiki to occur. The spiritually guided life force energy is powered by the practitioner and client’s intentions for healing, so that the client may receive their highest good through the relaxation response which is instigated by a Reiki treatment. The practitioner will also be working with sacred Reiki symbols to reinforce their connection with Reiki and the whole energy field so they can super charge their connection to both Reiki and the client.
When I first heard about distance healing and remote Reiki while I was training in Reiki level 2, I thought it sounded bonkers. I was sceptical, until I felt Reiki working through me and around me while I received a distance treatment.

Here’s what you can expect if you choose a remote Reiki session
The practitioner will arrange with you a time and date that you would like to receive your Reiki session.
At that time of your appointment you will probably have a phone call or Zoom meeting with your Reiki practitioner. They will explain the logistics of the session, confirm that you consent to the session and ask you what you would like to receive healing for during your appointment. If you are unsure, they will help you create an intention for your session if you are open to that. It is still OK to have a Reiki session if you do not have a specific reason, other than wanting to experience the energy!
If you are having a phone call with the practitioner rather than a Zoom, they may request that you send them a photo of yourself in advance of the appointment so that they can have a clearer vision of who they are sending Reiki to. You do not have to share a photo if you are not comfortable to, the session can still occur without one.
It is likely you will be asked for your address or location so that your practitioner can know where to be sending the Reiki in terms of geographic location. This will of course be kept confidential on the practitioner’s client information form.
When the initial consultation is over, you can cosy up into your space where you wish to lay down or sit to receive your treatment. The practitioner will ask you to set an alarm to bring you around at the end of your Reiki session, so that you can give and receive any feedback from the session. You might want to share about any sensations you felt, or intuitions that came through in your session. There is no pressure to share anything though. The practitioner will ask if you want to hear any feedback that they have for you.
When the Reiki begins, the practitioner may end the call or stay on the line with you throughout.
During your session you may feel a sense of calm relaxation, pain relief, slowed breathing, peace, or gentle bursts of energy plus various body sensations from tingling and buzzing to warm or cool. It is also usual that you may release blocked energy through tears, laughter, coughing or digestive sounds. After a Reiki session people often report seeing colours behind their eyes, lightness or heaviness in the body, or sensing that the spirit of a loved one or spirit guide is present. It is equally possible that you may not feel anything at all and just have a nice nap. It is OK to fall sleep. It is best not to attach to any expectations of how you might feel during the session.
You can ask for the session to pause or stop at any time.
When your alarm sounds it will be time for you to come around from resting and to share feedback confidentially between you and the practitioner. You will be informed of Reiki aftercare so that you can look after yourself after your session.
Now you know that you can receive Reiki without even leaving your home, perhaps you feel more confident to book your first distance appointment. I love to share Reiki both in person and remotely. Both types of session offer profound calm and soothe common conditions such as stress, fatigue, anxiety, rumination, depression, trauma symptoms, low self-esteem and pain.
